Did you know that many plumbing companies offering residential service and repair are now paying their plumbers on commission?? Or that they put their plumbers through extensive sales training? 

It is a fact - and all that does is entice those plumbers to try to "upsell" at every chance they get. Due to this, many times customers are getting "sold" services or products they don't really need, or they are getting quoted extremely high prices for services they do need.  

While it is great to have a "flat price" quoted even for minor repairs, this typically results in a higher cost to the customer.  The "flat price" model is what is usually used when plumbers are paid on commission or mostly commission.

The overall costs for home repair in many trades such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC has gone up over the recent years and that is due to such a shortage of qualified skilled craftsman in each trade.  It is a very real issue we are facing in our communities.

However, we have seen some exceptionally high price quotes and quotes for work not necessary to customers from competitors for plumbing work and we believe those quotes are generated for two reasons: 

1. The "Flat Rate"/Commission Paid Model
2. Plumbers With Lack of Experience/Training

Read the info under the "Flat Pricing" tab for more on this but basically plumbers getting paid on commission who have gone through extensive sales training are getting paid based on how much money they can "sell" a job for, as well as how much "additional" work they can sell. (You will typically see these plumbers wanting to walk through your house for inspection and start pointing out other items you need to take care of ASAP.) We do tell our plumbers to keep our customers informed if they see any situation while out performing service that seriously needs to be addressed as we take very good care of our customers, but we don't go looking for problems and our plumbers are not incentivized in any way to "find" problems.

The other side of this issue is just lack of experience. So many companies now are "turning bodies" - the demand is so high for plumbers and there are not enough to go around. Many companies send out apprentices to perform work (this is against state law - ALWAYS ask the plumber to show you their license on site), and even some of the plumbers sent out on jobs are not trained to the level they should be. We have seen many times where a customer has a stopped up drain, and may have some roots in the sewer line and next thing you know they have been sold a drain cleaning service that didn't work, a camera service to inspect the line and have been quoted an extremely high number because they "need the entire sewer line replaced". Then they call us and we are in and out with the drain unstopped in 1 or 2 hours or were able to make a spot repair to the sewer line.  There are many scenarios where entire replacements of fixtures or piping is quoted simply because the plumber on the job doesn't have the experience to make the repair.
